Artists and Teachers at Time To Dance 2010
Eric Mutel ( France / Finland )
French born in 1973, Eric Mutel has been studying visual arts and photography at University and professional school in Paris, in France. He is currently living and working in Finland.
He's working as a visual artist, with photography, visual art installation, video, set/stage design, lighting design, sculpture, environmental arts, performances collaboration…
In recent years, he’s been in residences research project, in 2006, at Le Fresnoy, Studio National des Arts Contemporains, and in 2007 at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm, KKH, Sweden. He was nominated for the Discovery Awards Exhibition 2007 at the Rencontres de la Photographie Festival, in Arles, France.
Even tough his background is into photography, and therefore influenced by it, his practice and approach are more of an installation and visual artist, working with multiple mediums, medias, and arts fields. He is focusing more and more on projects mixing and bridging visual arts and live arts, also seeking development with new technologies and new medias, investigating and working on the perception of images, memory, body, movement, time, light, space, energy, tension, forces…
Work in progress and performance with frozen clothes and performer, during Time to Dance Festival.
Border Line
This work, process based, is dealing, in my point of view, with many possible subjects.
It started some time ago with somehow a visual object/form, frozen clothes, and the wish to use it as a body, an artifact, an other character, a dancer.
It is an attempt to explore the body, movement, space, limits, identity, and communication…
It is about fragility, protection, intimacy, violence, tenderness, loss, and impermanence…
It seeks impossible movement, restrained, constrained and still movement, limits of the body, space, skin, envelope, inside/out, limits of movement, and restriction for dancer.
It tends to question appearance, being, identity, and also reveal nature, organics…
It can be also burlesque, absurd…
It is somehow about some incapability to define things, but still willing to do so.
Kenneth Flak ( Norway / Netherlands )
Contemporary Dance Technique
Kenneth Flak teaches a class preparing the body for a wide range of movement styles, from acrobatics to martial arts and release technique. The basis of the class is the intelligent and clear use of momentum and rythm. All parts of the body is used for supporting the body weight, developing a very strong center and awareness of the body in the space.
Wee / Francesco Scavetta ( Italy )
Choreographer, and dancer, Francesco Scavetta leads together with Gry Kipperberg (Norway), the dance company Wee, that, established in Oslo in the 1999, has become one of the leading companies of the Norwegian scene. In the last years, Wee has been touring in Italy, Croatia, Cuba, France, Colombia, Venezuela, Estonia, Argentina, UK, Mexico and Austria. Scavetta’s theatricality have often been associated with the atmosphere of a weird dream or to a playful world of a child: strange, funny, poetic and, at the same time, surprising. The performances created changes in format and aesthetic: to the delicate memories of Daddy always wanted me to grow a pair of wings (1998), we contra-pose the complex technology of “live*” (2002), co-produced by the Biennale of Venice. The latest projects, Hey dude, let’s stick around a bit longer this time and And I just stood there, watching the sky and the people below have their conceptual
starting point from a curiosity in the theme of the “consciousness” and have a different unconventional dramaturgical structure. We can say that the latest productions enlisted themselves in the creative line of the post dramatic theatre, where the physicality exists on the same level, and with equivalent valour, with text, visual art and sound installations.
The core of the research has always been to deal with fragility and paradox, epiphany and dream, empathy and surprise, avoiding narrative and physical cliché, questioning reality and identity with humoristic disbelief. Born in Salerno (IT), Scavetta studied at National Academy of Dance of Rome, graduated in Theatre and Performing Arts and Post-graduted in Sciences of Communication. Along his artistical path, he regards as a particularly valuable his meetings with such choreographers and teachers and directors as Anne Theresa De Keersmaeker/Rosas, Giorgio Rossi, Dominique Dupuy, Adriana Borriello, Lans Gries and Bernardo Bertolucci.
A surprised body
In the last years, Scavetta has been holding a teaching project, titled A surprised body, based on release technique and contact-improvisation and influenced by his experience as a dancer and choreographer, and by his practice of tai chi chuan. The series of workshops started in the 2005, in Norway, and continued, throughout the 2006/2009, with workshops in: Italy, Croatia, Cuba, France, Colombia, Venezuela, Estonia, Argentina, UK, Belgium, Holland, Republic of San Marino, Austria, Finland, India and Russia, often within international festivals or in collaboration with Academies.
Notes on the class:
The basic class concentrates on centering and gravity, awakening our awareness and sensitivity. Harmonizing the movement with our breathing, we will release contractions in the joints, allowing the sense of the gravity to be a constant part of our awareness. The aim is letting the movement to cross freely throughout the body, with isolation in the limbs. We will work on creating antagonists to our movement, to explore the suspension in the fall or the extension in the reaching, to be able to wide the transformations of the central body and the shifts in the dynamics. Already as a title, “A surprised body” defines, for me, a metaphorical space. The image of a body in a constant alert, able to surprise himself, escaping from a habitual daily body and from any kind of routine. A body more focused on reacting, than on acting. More on receiving, than on doing. I am, personally, getting more and more interested in the process of the "learning". In the different way of articulating the transmission of the information, or even better of the experience. The mental understanding is not necessarily a "physical" understanding. My aim is to direct the attention of everyone, to the approach to the “learning process”: to question how to learn “how to learn”. The workshop, after a first part dedicated to ground the principals of the work, will articulate through a series of investigations on the movement and structured improvisations, intended as a conceptual, but also physical and mental, challenge.
A basic dance phrase is presented as a “key phrase”. Then, with several different tasks, it’s transformed and de-structured in a personal way. We will focus on the different ways to first appropriate of the phrase and than to transform it.

Improvisation and contact improvisation.
Two aspects of communication, I propose to focus at : communication with myself, partner and group through the common energy path and trusting my weight to the ground, to partner and group. During these two classes we will learn to guide the energy to the direction we want in our body, in the room and we will follow this energy path. We will move along the energy path together with a partner using the right moment and partner's support to fly . We will also learn to read details , which is noticed may be only by you, while others dance. We will play improvisation structures to experience being here and now while being watched by another part of the group.

An original and stimulating evening that address our need for intimacy and communication in an alienated world. The need to be liked, to be loved, and having to cope with reality become a source of inspiration for surprising movement. Accompanied by David Bowie songs, two men play a game whose rules are set from one moment to the next and in which they endeavor to free themselves from old habits and escape into fantasy.
