NEW DANCE IN A NEW PLACE has reached West coast of Latvia

27/08/2016

From August 28 till September 1 traveling interdisciplinary festival/seminar “New Dance in a New Place” is taking place in C?rava and Liep?ja. It will gather dancers, philosophers, journalists, choreographers, critics, musicians and visual artists from France, Finland, Germany and Latvia. Within the festival several performances, discussions, research seminar and creative labs will take place. The festival which already for the forth time is organized by DANCE.LV Journal in different places in Latvia aims at improving accessibility of contemporary arts outside the capital, enhance its undertstanding and collaboration among different fields. During the previous years the festival has been in regional concert halls in Rezekne, Cesis and Saldus Arts School.  Withing the festival of 2016 on August 31 in Liepaja concerthall “Great Amber”  two new contemporary dance performances will be presented – documentary dance performance “I’m a Really Shy Person” by Kristine Brinina and solo performance “Childhood’s Dream” by Agnese Bordjukova / Anatomy of Dance

The solo performance “I’m a Really Shy Person”is based on inspiration from conductor Andris Nelsons, which choreographer Krist?ne Br?ni?a now calls her hero. It is just a coincidence that this years Nelsons got the prestige Grammy award. Kristine says: „I feel that everyone has had a moment in life when someone else’s words expresed exactly what you thought, but hadn’t fomulated and identify it yet. That kind of experience presents a chance to encounter with yourself.”  The relationship between conductor and orchestra encouraged Kristine to think about our personal movements and actions which we are using in our everyday life furthermore what kind of “sound” it can create in the society and ongoing processes around us.

The performance “Childhood’s Dream” is based on the research about human personality development.  From the very first moment we start interacting with people – the society – we start learning things about them and most importantly about ourselves. Gradually we realize that not all parts of our personality are desirable and trying to stay a member of the society one tends to deny those qualities of oneself. Those qualities are being suppressed and hidden. But they do not disappear.

Important part of the festival is research seminar and creative labs. Groups of participants are finalized but anybody can come and see showings of some of the creative labs and meet festival guests. As mentioned already in the center of the festival are two key words “new” and “repetition”. Within the creative labs a philosopher Max Rynnanen (Finland) in his speech will play with those concepts. The founder of BalletBodyLogic Annemari Autere (France) will offer classes focusing on rational functioning of the body. A choreographer Tobias M.Dreager (Germany) in his work integrates dance, theater and osteopathy. He will lead workshop working with the quality of touch. Jeweler and arts theoretician Ginta Zabarovska (Latvia) will tell about jewelry as extension of the body. Choreographers Krist?ne Br?ni?a and Agnese Bordjukova (Latvia) will offer a workshop called “Is my body my body?”. Musician Laima Jansone (Latvia)  will share her vision of choreography of sounds. Choreographer Santa Gr?nfelde, set designer Krista Bri?e and dance critic Inta Balode will introduce the creative process of making a new dance piece called “She dances”.
